Sidney Greene Blanton, born June 11, 1941, in Shelby, North Carolina, passed away on March 22, 2026, at Atrium Health in Shelby, North Carolina. He was a distinguished professional whose career spanned over three decades in the textile industry, where he made significant contributions as the Human Resources Director at Dover Mills / Doran Textiles in Shelby, NC. Sidney concluded his career after retiring from Four Leaf Textiles in Clover, South Carolina.
A proud graduate of Shelby High School, Sidney furthered his education by earning a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He served honorably in the United States Army, a testament to his dedication to country and community. Reflecting his commitment to service, he held deep pride for his grandson, Reid Blanton, who is actively serving in the United States Marine Corps, stationed in Oahu, Hawaii.
Sidney was married for 57 years, a partnership that was central to his life. He was an ardent fan of NC State Wolfpack football and basketball, passionately supporting his teams through the years. Beyond his professional and athletic interests, Sidney found joy in the tranquility of nature and the company of loved ones. His hobbies included trips to the mountains, fly fishing for trout, working diligently in his yard, and spending quiet moments sitting on the porch enjoying the outdoors. Above all, Sidney cherished time with his family and friends.
Sidney was a lifelong member of Lafayette Street Church serving on multiple committees throughout the years.
Sidney's legacy is carried forward by his daughter Jennifer Bates and husband Richard of Ft. Mill, South Carolina; his son Jody Blanton and wife Suzanne of Shelby, North Carolina; and his grandson Reid Blanton of Shelby, North Carolina. He is also survived by nieces Robyn Kerr and Allison Hodges, and nephew Eric Putnam, a sister-in-law, Kay Putnam and a brother-in-law, Michael Putnam. Sidney was preceded in death by his father, Greene Berry Blanton; mother, Gazzie Short Blanton; wife, Brenda Jean Weaver Blanton; sister, Emily Kirby; sister, Malinda “Tilley” Jackson; and brother, Reid Joseph Blanton.
Funeral services celebrating Sidney’s life will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, beginning with a visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services & Crematory located at 2518 W Dixon Blvd, Shelby, NC. This will be followed by a graveside service at 12:00 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, 1225 College Ave, Shelby, NC, conducted by Rev. Tonya Garrison.
The family would like to express a sincere gratitude to Sheila Mode, Patty Richardson, The Helping Hands Team, and Hospice of Cleveland County, for providing excellent care over the past 3 years.
Sidney Greene Blanton will be remembered not only for his professional achievements and military service but also for his unwavering devotion to family, his love of the outdoors, and his enduring support of his community and passions. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
