Robert Lee Murray

Robert Lee Murray, born on May 13, 1944, in Rutherford County, North Carolina, passed away on July 31, 2026, at Atrium Health Hospital in Shelby, North Carolina. His long and well-lived life was filled with enduring love, joyous companionship, and a deep commitment to his family, his faith, and his passions.

Robert's journey began in the close-knit community of Rutherford County, where he was raised by his parents, Cornelius Earl Murray and Kathleen Harris Murray, both of whom preceded him in death. From those early days, Robert developed a love for simple, heartfelt pleasures and meaningful connections—a spirit which remained with him always.

Robert’s family was a cornerstone of his life. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Tena Greene Murray, who stood by his side through the joys and challenges of life. Cherishing his memory are his children: Jeff Murray and wife Lisa, Kim Murray Smith and fiancé Jason Griffin. Robert deeply valued the many relationships that enriched his days, and he embraced each member of his family with affection and pride.

He was blessed to be a grandfather to Tyler Smith, Jessica Leonhardt and husband Jordan, Lucas Murray and wife Emily, and Lydia Skipper and husband Derek, all of whom brought him great happiness. Robert’s bond with his sister, Linda Helfrich and husband Stewart and their daughter Lisa was another enduring source of strength and support. The family, touched by love and connectedness, celebrates the many ways he enriched their lives.

Robert’s passions extended beyond his family. He was an avid fisherman, finding peace and joy on the water. An accomplished woodworker, Robert could often be found creating with his hands, pouring care and craft into each project. His days were further brightened by the companionship of his beloved dog, Bommer, with whom he shared many playful moments.

Robert also found meaning as a faithful member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. His faith provided guidance, hope, and inspiration throughout his life, and he participated fully in the church community, serving faithfully and making deep connections with his fellow congregants.

A visitation will be held from 2:00pm - 3:00pm Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 3:00pm at the church conducted by Rev. Derek Greene and Dr. Terry Cagle. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
