Richard Steven Franklin, lovingly known as Steve, was born on February 5, 1946, in Cleveland County, North Carolina. He passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, at Peak Resources of Gastonia, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Steve dedicated many years of his life to the John Jenkins Construction Company, where he made his mark building highways and roads that connected communities. His commitment to hard work exemplified his character, as he approached each day with quiet determination and humility. He was the embodiment of a dedicated provider, ensuring his family had everything they needed and more.
Family was the cornerstone of Steve's existence. He shared a remarkable bond with his beloved wife, Linda Foster Franklin, with whom he was married for an inspiring 58 years. Their love was a beautiful testament to partnership and devotion that is rarely found. Steve adored his children, Shelia Arrowood (Scott Philbeck) and Bobbie Franklin (Kelly Welch), and his heart swelled with pride as he embraced his role as grandfather to Selene Smith, Jacob Smith, Dallas Black (Luke), and Dillon Arrowood. Steve's love extended further, as he envisioned a special future for his great-grandchild, Hunter Smith, making arrangements for him to have a vehicle when the time came.
Those who knew Steve understood his kind-hearted nature and his love for helping others. He always lent a hand, whether it was through his work or the personal connections he forged throughout his life. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, indulging in both deep-sea and freshwater adventures, often finding solace and joy on the water.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Linda; daughters, Shelia Arrowood (Scott Philbeck) and Bobbie Franklin (Kelly Welch); brothers, Randy Short and Dean Short; sisters, Patricia Ann Mahon (Bill), Darlene Cadwallader, and Lori Biggers; and his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Franklin; mother, Ruth Short; adopted father, J.D. Short; adopted mother, Doris Short; infant brother, Michael Franklin; and brothers, Craig Franklin and Bill Short.
As we remember Steve, we celebrate a life lived with dignity, kindness, and unwavering love for family. His spirit will forever be a guiding light in the hearts of those he touched. A memorial service in honor of Steve will be announced and shared, allowing friends and loved ones to pay their respects and share their memories. Please keep an eye out for details.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to his beloved church, Patterson Grove Baptist Church, 301 Oak Grove Rd, Kings Mountain, NC 28086, in Steve's memory.
