Mary Gold Tanner

Mary Gold Tanner, born on December 22, 1954, in Shelby, North Carolina, passed away on May 19, 2026, in Gastonia, North Carolina. She was a cherished member of her family, known for her dedication, warmth, and unwavering love for those around her.

Mary devoted much of her life to her career as a store manager at Revco, which later became CVS, where she worked diligently until her retirement. Her professional commitment was matched only by her passion for spending time with her family and friends. She especially treasured moments with her grandchildren and found immense joy in cooking and baking for her loved ones—a reflection of her nurturing spirit and generous heart.

She shared 33 years of marriage with her devoted husband, Keith Tanner of Gastonia, NC. Mary's close-knit family included her daughters Deanna McSwain and husband Michael of Shelby, NC, and Andrea Asdel of Gastonia, NC. Her family circle extended to a beloved stepdaughter, Tracy Tanner Playforth and husband Bill of Holly Springs, NC, and stepson Wade Tanner of Gastonia, NC. Her siblings, who carry forward her legacy, include brothers Bill Gold and wife Maria of Iron Station, NC, Morris Gold and wife Drew of Shelby, NC, and sister Sarah McGinnis of Shelby, NC. She was also close to her sister-in-law Carolyn Gold of Shelby, NC.

Mary's family was further blessed by her seven grandchildren: Jackson Burris, Makayla McSwain, Wyatt McSwain, Lawton McSwain, Georgia Sams, Lexi French, and Jordan Peach, who brought immeasurable joy to her life.

Her passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She is preceded in death by her parents Sam Gold and Patsy Philbeck Cabaniss, and brothers Phil Gold and John Oliver Gold, who remain fondly remembered by all who knew them.

A Celebration of Life honoring Mary Gold Tanner will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 2:00 PM, followed by visitation at 3:00 PM, both at Cleveland Funeral Services & Crematory, located at 2518 W Dixon Blvd, Shelby, NC 28152. This gathering will provide family, friends, and community members the opportunity to pay their respects and celebrate the life of a remarkable woman whose kindness and spirit touched so many.
