Mr. Blackwell, 87, of 1425 E. Marion St., Sterling House, passed away Thursday, March 11, 2010. A native of Spartanburg SC, he was retired from Aker's Motor Lines and Porter Brothers and served in the U. S. Army WWII and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. He receuved tge American Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star and 6 Overseas Service Bars. Jim was a member of Bethel Baptist Church & Cleveland Masonic Lodge 202. Mr. Blackwell was preceeded in death by his parents Charles G. Blackwell & Linnie Stockton Blackwell, his wife Mildred Frances Smith Blackwell, and a granddaughter Andrea Beth Blackwell. Mr. Blackwell is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Ron Balckwell & Beverly of Shelby, a daughter and son-in-law Pam Vess & Steve of Charlotte, NC, grandsons; Ronald Steven Blackwell & wife Amber of Newport, NC, Chris Vess & wife Agata of Charlotte, NC, Nathan Vess & wife Casey of Gastonia, NC, granddaughter Ashley Vess of Charlotte, NC and a great grandson Zach Vess. Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Tim Sims. Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 606 South Dekalb Street, Shelby, NC 28150.
